TheMAX3100universalasynchronousreceivertransmitter(UART)isthefirstUARTspecificallyoptimizedforsmallmicrocontroller-basedsystems.UsinganSPI™/MICROWIRE™interfaceforcommunicationwiththehostmicrocontroller(μC),theMAX3100comesinacompact24-pin-TQFNand16-pinQSOP.TheasynchronousI/OissuitableforuseinRS-232,RS-485,IR,andopto-isolateddatalinks.IR-linkcommunicationiseasywiththeMAX3100'sinfrareddataassociation(IrDA)timingmode.
TheMAX3100includesacrystaloscillatorandabaud-rategeneratorwithsoftware-programmabledividerratiosforallcommonbaudratesfrom300baudto230kbaud.Asoftware-orhardware-invokedshutdownlowersquiescentcurrentto10μA,whileallowingtheMAX3100todetectreceiveractivity.
An8-word-deepfirst-in/first-out(FIFO)bufferminimizesprocessoroverhead.Thisdevicealsoincludesaflexibleinterruptwithfourmaskablesources,includingaddressrecognitionon9-bitnetworks.Twohardware-handshakingcontrollinesareincluded(oneinputandoneoutput).
TheMAX3100isavailablein14-pinplasticDIPandsmall,16-pinQSOPpackagesinthecommercialandextendedtemperatureranges.
