Thesetransceiversdrawaslittleas120μAsupplycurrentwhenunloadedorwhenfullyloadedwithdisableddrivers(seeSelectorGuide).Additionally,theMAX481E,MAX483E,andMAX487Ehavealow-currentshutdownmodeinwhichtheyconsumeonly0.5μA.Allpartsoperatefromasingle+5Vsupply.

Driversareshort-circuitcurrentlimited,andareprotectedagainstexcessivepowerdissipationbythermalshutdowncircuitrythatplacestheiroutputsintoahigh-impedancestate.Thereceiverinputhasafail-safefeaturethatguaranteesalogic-highoutputiftheinputisopencircuit.
